Los falsificadores de moneda narra la historia de un héroe (Bernard) azarosamente combinada con la de un novelista (Édouard) y de la novela que está escribiendo. A su lado, no menos de veinticinco personajes de todas las edades se enredan en una trama de rivalidades afectivas y literarias que componen un retrato múltiple, espejeante y sinuoso, en torno al tema de la libertad de elección. Gide se inspiró en dos crónicas de sucesos -la desarticulación de una banda adolescente de falsificadores de moneda y el suicidio de un colegial delante de sus compañeros de clase- para escribir esta novela cánonica del siglo XX.
